Education Theory and Practice

Education has changed a lot since the industrial revolutions of the 18th and 19th century. The warehouse method of teaching in a classroom shows signs of decay that insist on changes that will invigorate instructors and students. Modern tools such as computers and the internet are now mixed with the old idea of distance learning creating a new option called online teaching and learning. Some schools have courses that are conducted entirely online while some institutions have taken a “hybrid” approach that combines the best of online learning with the advantages of group learning in a classroom.

Educators now use an outcomes based approach based on the best pedagogy (K-12 education), andragogy (adult education) and heutagogy (self-learning) to deliver standards based curricula dubbed, “21st century learning.”

This updated approach to education includes the refined theories and tools that have been the foundation to successful teaching. Successful teaching is no longer limited to top tier universities, one can now obtain the most cutting edge tools from organizations, consortia, and research centers.

Many institutions have found enormous success with constructivism and group teaching approaches. Such approaches emphasizes and builds upon the strengths and weaknesses of the students/participants while providing direction and information that develop each individual to the peak of their potential. This approach seeks to develop the discipline for necessary for rigor and the research capacity necessary for cogent critical thinking, analysis and application of knowledge.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is still heavily used in education theory. However now the world is struggling with the challenge of older teachers that are considered digital immigrants that have to effectively teach younger pupils that are considered digital natives. Through the interaction of site participants, this site will discuss how to meet challenges of the 21st century learning model while resolving the conflicts of constructivist practices and applications between digital immigrants and digital natives.
